The RUINER is an automatic ballistic pistol. It's the first ranged weapon available, found midway through the tutorial section, and remains the only permanent ranged weapon through the rest of the game.

Practicality

The RUINER fires fully automatic but does very little damage initially. While its ammo capacity is marked as infinite, it still needs a very short 'reload' time when its magazine reaches zero. This makes it less appealing than most dropped weapons while keeping it from being useless. It can also notably be upgraded from an auto pistol to a machine pistol to an SMG which lets it maintain its relevance even in the late game.

And then he gave it to some punk he owed money to who had a grudge with HEAVEN Corp. No one ever saw the lowlife again, or his gun. It was faster, lighter, but just as deadly as the original SQUID. And as luck would have it, you found it. Lucky bastard!
